7 proven strategies to boost your conversion rate (and get more clients, sales and revenue!)

Let’s get real for a moment.

You have an amazing website that looks great and brings in loads of traffic. But, are you making sales from all those wonderful visitors? If not, you have an opportunity to fix this!

Your business needs customers, not visitors. While attracting more traffic is an important goal, it’s not your top priority. Encouraging visitors to make a purchase needs to be your end goal.

So, what can you do to increase your chances of converting visitors into paying customers? If you’re struggling in this area, here are the strategies you need to boost your conversion rate and get more clients, sales and revenue.

Boost your conversion rate with these 7 proven strategies

Make your value proposition front and centre

Do visitors understand the value you deliver? Is it clear on your homepage how you help your customers? If not, you’re leaving money on the table. Build trust and let people know what to expect from you by including a clear value proposition (a brand statement) on your website.

Do you help new mums feel fabulous with your clothes? Do you save local business owners’ time in getting their tax in order? Tell the world who you help, how you help and why you help on your homepage. You will catch more attention, build more trust and help visitors understand that you could be the answer to their problem.

Your website might look amazing but if it’s not easy to use, any traffic that comes your way won’t stick around. To boost your conversion rate, review your website from the customer perspective and identify any barriers that may be preventing visitors from taking action.

Start with your homepage and check the following:

  • Is your menu clear and logical? You want to make it easy for visitors to find information on your site.
  • How many clicks does it take to get to a resource or product? You want to minimise the work visitors have to do to find the information they need.
  • How long does it take for your page to load? If visitors are waiting more than 5 seconds to see anything load, you’ve already lost them.
  • Is your font and text easy to read? Avoid fancy fonts, steer clear of busy backgrounds and don’t make your text too small.
  • Is your website mobile friendly? More people are accessing websites using their phones so your site needs to be accessible, whatever device visitors use.

Do you know how visitors and clients interact with your website? Do you know what they are looking for and how they move through the buying journey? If you understand the needs of your customer and their purchasing journey, you’ll be able to make it easier for them to buy.

For instance, if the majority of your customers refer to the FAQs on your site before purchase, ensure they are easy to find on your homepage. If more customers are abandoning their carts than usual, see if there’s a problem with your payment process or view the cart and check out on your mobile device. Sometimes a very simple fix can transform the customer journey and instantly boost your conversion rate.

Offer social proof to your customers

Visitors rarely buy when they first land on a new site. They need to get to know you and have proof that you can deliver on your promises before they commit to parting with their hard-earned cash. The fastest and easiest way to provide proof and build trust is through reviews and testimonials.

People trust other people and will be more likely to buy if they can see that others have done so already. Show visitors they can trust you by sharing what others have said about your products and services. Share testimonials on your homepage and link to reviews on Google My Business, Facebook and other industry-specific forums for more powerful social proof.

See what your competitors are doing

If it looks like your competitors are making more sales than you are, it’s time to find out why. Review their sites and see what strategies they are using to encourage conversions. Analyse what they are doing well, compare it to your site and see what you can improve.

Ask yourself why a visitor should choose you over your competition. Can you beat them on price, quality, experience, knowledge or range? Looking at your competition can help you identify what makes you different, clarify your value proposition and make it easier for you to stand out. Trust us, with that knowledge, it’s a whole lot easier to boost your conversion rate!

Pay attention to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Good SEO won’t only attract visitors to your site, it will help them stick around longer and increase your chances of conversion. A core element of organic marketing, an effective SEO strategy will ensure you have good quality content that can be easily discovered by visitors.

Boost SEO by finding relevant keywords and using them in your copy to attract the interest of visitors (for conversions) and Google (so more visitors can find you). Write content that answers the burning questions of your audience. Ensure your homepage is well laid out and easy to navigate. Pay attention to page speed, responsiveness and design.

Add clear Call to Actions (CTAs)

When visiting a new place, you look for clues so you can get the most from your visit and get to where you want to go. The same goes for visitors to your website. They don’t know how your site works and they need help. That’s why clear CTAs are so effective in boosting conversions.

Use action words when writing your CTAs to encourage a response and increase take up. A great way to write a CTA is to imagine your visitor saying “I want to…”, and finishing the sentence for them with the CTA. I want to GET STARTED. I want to LEARN MORE. I want to SHOP NOW. Lead visitors to the conversion action you want them to take with a strong CTA.
